Banner Designs for The River & Rowing Museum, 1998

The project brief was for a series of banners to signpost the entrance to the museum in Henley-on-Thames and for the design process to incorporate workshops with local primary schools, a museum-target audience.  Shelly Goldsmith was selected on the basis of her concept proposal of a programme of workshops with local primary school children aged seven to eleven looking at a range of themes examining the life and history of the River Thames.

We worked in collaboration with the artist and the museum’s education officer to put together a programme of workshops for the schools. The themes, including evolution of river craft (leisure, sport and commercial) river wildlife and geology, were further developed in the workshops, with the children working with the museum’s various collections, and as one child said: “The River Thames is more than you think it is.” Shelly Goldsmith incorporated the children’s ideas with hers into designs for 6 banners which were then exhibited alongside the children’s works in the museum.
